Telegram channel or group? The differences and which to start

How Telegram channels and groups differ: who can post, member limits, privacy and which one fits your goal.

Updated: Oct 24, 2026

The key difference: broadcast or conversation?

A Telegram channel is a one-way broadcast: only admins post and subscribers read. A Telegram group is a chat room: every member can write (if allowed).

Comparison

Look at these differences when deciding:

  • Who posts: admins only in a channel; all members in a group.
  • Member limit: channels have no subscriber limit; groups can grow to 200,000 members.
  • View counts: channel posts show how many people saw them; groups don't.
  • Privacy: channel subscribers can't see each other; a group's member list is usually visible.
  • Comments: link a discussion group to a channel to allow comments under posts.

Which one should you start?

For news, announcements, content or brand communication, start a channel; it stays easy to manage as it grows. To build a community or offer Q&A and support, a group fits better.

Many successful projects use both: announcements in the channel, conversation in the linked group. On TeleGrowly you can add and grow both your channels and your public groups.
